Analysis
What a dexterous hand shipping cost actually covers
A dexterous hand shipping cost is billed on chargeable weight, not on the hand. At $6.03/kg a 20 kg lot flies for $121; the same lot on a pallet bills $965.
The short version
A dexterous hand shipping cost follows chargeable weight, and chargeable weight follows the carton. Ten hands in ten cartons bill 20 kg and $121 by air at $6.03/kg; the same ten hands on one pallet bill 160 kg and $965, because air freight pays for the space in the box rather than the hardware.
A dexterous hand shipping cost is set by the carton, not by the hand. The Freightos Air Index printed $6.03 per kg for Greater China to North America when checked on November 8, 2026, and the same index printed $7.76 per kg in its November 3 update, as one forwarder reports it. Neither figure is what a buyer pays for one hand, because a single hand is too small to buy space at an index rate.
Two hands in one carton weigh about 4 kg. Ten hands weigh 20 kg, and at $6.03 per kg that lot flies for $120.60. The same ten hands on a 120 by 80 by 100 cm pallet bill 160 kg, or $964.80. Nothing about the hardware changed. The air around it did.
| Shipment | Gross weight | Chargeable weight | Air freight at $6.03/kg | Air freight at $7.76/kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One hand, one carton | 2.0 kg | 2.0 kg | $12.06 | $15.52 |
| Two hands, one carton | 4.0 kg | 4.0 kg | $24.12 | $31.04 |
| Ten hands, ten cartons | 20.0 kg | 20.0 kg | $120.60 | $155.20 |
| Fifty hands, fifty cartons | 100.0 kg | 100.0 kg | $603.00 | $776.00 |
| Ten hands, one pallet, 120×80×100 cm | 20.0 kg | 160.0 kg | $964.80 | $1,241.60 |
| Fifty hands, four pallets | 100.0 kg | 640.0 kg | $3,859.20 | $4,966.40 |
The pallet rows are arithmetic, not a quotation: a 120 by 80 by 100 cm load is 0.96 cubic meters and the divisor does the rest. Above its 300 kg break a forwarder prices the same shipment lower.
How much does a dexterous hand shipping cost for one unit?
More per kilo than a fleet buyer pays, and less in total than most people expect.
Standard air freight starts at a 45 kg break, which one forwarder's November 2026 rate sheet puts at $6.90 to $8.00 per kg, falling to $5.85 to $7.70 at 100 kg and $3.50 to $6.50 above 300 kg. A single hand never reaches that break, so it moves as an express parcel, priced at $32 to $59 for 0.5 to 1 kg and $53 to $136 for 2 to 5 kg.
As effective rates they invert: $32 to $59 a kilo at half a kilo, $11 to $27 a kilo at 2 to 5 kg. The index rate is not available to anyone shipping under 45 kg, which is why a budget built on a headline per-kg figure is always short.
Which number does the airline bill, weight or volume?
The higher one. Air freight divides cubic centimeters by 6,000, so one cubic meter bills at 167 kg even when the cargo inside weighs 20 kg. Express parcels usually use 5,000, and the rate sheet checked for this piece states no minimum billable weight.
Hands are dense. A Hitbot eHand-6 lists a 1.5 kg export carton at 18 by 12 by 9 cm, which is 0.32 kg volumetric. An Inspire RH56DFX listing shows 2.0 kg gross in a 25 by 15 by 5 cm package, 0.31 kg volumetric. Actual weight governs both by a factor of five.
The volumetric rule bites when the packing stops being tight: a foam-cut case sized for the hand plus a wrist adapter plus cables, or a pallet. The RH56 price record is the reference here, because the same model appears at four USD prices with different bundles, and the bundle is what changes the carton.
How do I cut a dexterous hand shipping cost?
- Ask for the packing list before the quote. Gross weight, carton dimensions, carton count. A forwarder cannot price a box nobody measured, and a foam-cut case can double volumetric weight, as the landed-cost guide notes.
- Consolidate to a weight break, not to a pallet. Ten cartons at 20 kg and one pallet at 160 kg chargeable are the same goods and a $844 difference.
- Ship spares with the first order. A finger assembly sent later repeats the whole cycle, which is why field 8 of the RFQ template asks for its price and lead time up front.
- Compare insurance with the freight. All-risk cover at 1% to 2% of value is $56 to $112 on a $5,600 hand, four to nine times the air freight on a 2 kg parcel.
- Use sea freight above one cubic meter. Less-than-container rates on Shanghai to Los Angeles were $120 to $200 per cubic meter for 28 to 38 days in November 2026, with a one cubic meter minimum.
What does a warranty return add?
A second freight cycle, and a decision about who pays it. The return travels the original route: export paperwork, air freight, entry, delivery. Warranties are typically one year and commonly cover the part rather than the trip, which is why the landed-cost guide carries a reserve of 5% to 15% of the invoice.
Two questions settle it before the order: who books and pays the return leg, and what the vendor ships while the hand is in transit.
Collect four numbers before asking for a freight quote: gross weight, carton dimensions, carton count, and the delivery term on the invoice. The first three decide whether volume or weight governs. The fourth decides whether freight is your line at all.

Questions
How much does it cost to ship one dexterous hand?
By express parcel, $32 to $59 for a 0.5 to 1 kg shipment and $53 to $136 for 2 to 5 kg, on the Q4 2026 contract rates one forwarder publishes. Standard air freight does not quote below its 45 kg break, so a single hand is always a parcel, never a consignment.
Is freight billed on weight or on size?
On the higher of the two. Air freight divides cubic centimeters by 6,000, so one cubic meter of cargo bills at 167 kg whether it weighs that or not. Hands are dense, but the foam-cut case and the pallet are not, which is where the bill grows.
Who pays freight on a warranty return?
Ask before ordering, because vendor terms differ and the return travels the same route as the original order: export paperwork, air freight, entry, then three to six weeks. The warranty often covers the part and not the trip.
Does sea freight work for a fleet order?
Yes, above roughly one cubic meter. Less-than-container rates on Shanghai to Los Angeles were $120 to $200 per cubic meter for 28 to 38 days in November 2026, with a one cubic meter minimum, against $964.80 to fly a pallet of ten hands.
