Analysis
What a dexterous hand quote leaves out: six lines
A dexterous hand quote prices the hand and stops there. Five more lines add $950 to a $5,000 unit, and the return path is not priced at all.
The short version
A dexterous hand quote covers the unit and usually nothing else. In the worked example this site publishes, five lines add $950 to a $5,000 hand, 19% above the invoice, and a warranty reserve is the line buyers most often leave out.
A dexterous hand quote usually prices one thing: the hand. Everything that decides whether the purchase works, from the spare finger to who pays freight on a warranty return, is settled later and often in a different document.
The size of the gap is measurable. The worked example in this site's landed-cost guide starts with a $5,000 invoice and ends at $5,950 once freight, insurance, import charges, brokerage and a warranty reserve are added. That is 19% on top of the number most buyers compare, and not one of those five lines appears on a product page.
Live listings confirm the shape. On November 7, 2026 the Inspire RH56DFX page on a US dealer site showed $10,500 and the word Backorder. The same dealer's Wuji Hand 2 page showed $14,600 a side and $29,200 a pair, with shipping calculated at checkout. Price and stock status are published. Freight, spares and the return path are conversations.
How much does a hand quote breakdown add?
For one hand bought from an overseas vendor, 19% is the low end of what this site has recorded. The guide puts the total at 25% to 40% for a mid-priced hand, because the percentages are applied to a larger invoice and because the warranty reserve grows with the price of the unit.
| Line | What it covers | Amount on a $5,000 hand |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice price | Hand, cables, controller if included | $5,000 |
| Freight at 4% | Air for one unit, billed on volumetric weight | $200 |
| Insurance at 2% | All-risk cover on the shipped value | $100 |
| Import charges at 3% | As quoted in writing by your broker | $150 |
| Brokerage at 2% | Entry filing and terminal fees | $100 |
| Warranty reserve at 8% | Failures expected outside vendor cover | $400 |
| Landed total | What the purchase costs before tax | $5,950 |
The percentages are illustrative, and the guide says so. The lines are not: every one of them is a real invoice item on a real purchase, and every one is missing from the price on the product page.
Which lines go missing most often?
Four of the six are recoverable with one email. Two are not, and they are the expensive ones.
- Spare parts. A price and lead time for one finger assembly, one motor and one harness. A vendor who can quote these runs a service business. A vendor who cannot is shipping hardware and closing the file.
- The second freight cycle. A failed hand under warranty travels the same route as the original order: export paperwork, air freight, entry, and the same three to six weeks. The warranty may cover the part and not the trip.
- The wrist adapter. A hand quoted without a mount is not a hand you can fit to an arm. The RH56 records show a 650 g figure with the wrist against 540 g without it.
- Documentation. URDF or MJCF, the protocol specification, and an SDK that runs before purchase. Buyers discover a missing model file after the invoice clears.
- The interface. RS-485, CAN and EtherCAT are not interchangeable, and a hand that speaks the wrong bus needs a converter that nobody quoted.
- The evaluation window. Return terms and restocking fees belong in the same email as the price. Later they are not negotiable.
What is a quote actually worth?
Less than its layout suggests. The dealer terms checked on November 7, 2026 state that quotes are estimates and that an order is accepted only when confirmed in writing. That is standard commercial language, and it means the quote is a starting document.
Two consequences follow. First, the number on the quote can move between the quote and the confirmation, particularly on lead time. Second, the terms that will govern a failure live in the order confirmation, which most buyers read after the deposit. Ask for the confirmation draft before paying, and compare it with the quote line by line.
Do I need the landed figure before comparing quotes?
Yes, and the arithmetic is short. Take the invoice, add freight and insurance from the Incoterm, add the broker's written figure, then add a warranty reserve between 5% and 15% of the invoice. Two quotes on the same hand at $5,600 and $10,500 do not look like the same product until both are carried through to a landed number, and the RH56 record keeps four observations rather than an average for exactly that reason.
The hand itself is the smallest unknown in the transaction. The RFQ template lists twelve fields that make a quote comparable, and the price panel shows what the same units cost in other channels with the date attached.
Send the six lines in one email. A vendor who answers five of them is telling you something useful about the sixth.

Questions
What should a dexterous hand quote include besides the price?
Six lines: what ships in the box, the Incoterm, freight and insurance, import charges quoted in writing by your broker, the price of one finger assembly and one harness, and who pays return freight under warranty. Ask for all six in the first email, because that is when they are negotiable.
Is a written quote a firm offer?
Not on the dealer terms checked on November 7, 2026, which state that quotes are estimates and an order is accepted only when confirmed in writing. Treat the quote as a starting document and read the order confirmation before paying a deposit.
How much does freight add to a single hand?
In the site's worked example, air freight at 4% and all-risk insurance at 2% add $300 to a $5,000 hand. The percentage moves with the case size, because a foam-cut case can double the volumetric weight that air freight bills on.
